Attorney General Jack Conway today warned that many members who bank with Commonwealth Credit Union in Frankfort have received a hoax email claiming that their accounts have been locked and they must confirm their user information. General Conway advises that this is a hoax and that members should not respond because it will provide the sender with access to their accounts.

“Thousands of state government employees utilize this credit union for their banking needs, and Commonwealth Credit confirms with our office that the email is bogus and the financial institution has not requested this information from members,” General Conway said.

The Attorney General’s cybercrimes unit is investigating the hoax email.

Consumers Tips

  • Your financial institution will never request account information from you through email or over the phone.
  • Do not give your account information to anyone unless you have initiated the call.
  • Do not click on links contained in emails that claim to be from financial institutions. This will often lead you to a “spoof” web page that could open your computer to viruses.
  • Do not call phone numbers that are included in these phishing emails.
